The highly anticipated Jeep Wrangler is set to receive an electrified makeover as the legendary off-road vehicle joins the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. In addition to the Wrangler, Jeep enthusiasts can also look forward to an all-electric Grand Cherokee hitting the market in the near future. These exciting developments were revealed in a tentative labor agreement between Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, and the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which outlined plans for the production of several new EV models.
UAW President Shawn Fain shared details of the new labor contract, highlighting significant wage increases, improved retirement and healthcare benefits, and various other perks and enhancements. This groundbreaking agreement, valued at more than the cumulative total of the past four contracts, signifies Stellantis’ commitment to the EV sector. The automotive giant plans to invest a staggering $19 billion by April 2028 in battery plants, facility upgrades, EV training, and the development of new electric vehicles.
Under this agreement, Stellantis will construct three new EV battery plants, with two located in Kokomo, Indiana, and the third situated at the Belvidere assembly plant in Illinois. An impressive $9.4 billion will be invested in these battery plants, creating approximately 3,900 jobs. Furthermore, the deal entails expanding EV production in existing plants, marking the auto industry’s collective shift towards electric mobility. Among Stellantis’ exciting plans are the production of a new electric Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.
As the anticipation builds, Stellantis has already unveiled several upcoming Jeep models destined for production. Next year, Jeep will introduce its first EVs in the United States, including the Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Wrangler, the Recon aims to be a “rugged and fully capable electric SUV,” offering optional features such as removable doors and windows. According to Jim Morrison, the head of Jeep North America, the Recon possesses the capability to conquer the renowned Rubicon Trail.
Meanwhile, the Wagoneer S represents the electrified version of Jeep’s premium SUV. Stellantis claims that this upscale EV boasts an impressive range, enabling it to travel from New York City to Toronto on a single charge. These new models are just the tip of the iceberg, as the UAW agreement includes the introduction of an electric Jeep Wrangler in 2028. Off-road enthusiasts who prefer not to wait that long will be pleased to know that an all-electric Grand Cherokee is expected to arrive in 2027, a year earlier. The electric Jeep Grand Cherokee will be produced at the Detroit Assembly Complex, although further details have not yet been disclosed.
In addition to the Jeep lineup, Stellantis’ other brands, including Dodge and Ram, are also set to electrify their offerings in the coming years. Ram will launch its first EV, the Ram 1500 REV, next year, while Dodge gears up for the debut of the electric Dodge Charger Daytona SRT, an electrified version of its renowned muscle car. Dodge’s plans also include the release of a next-generation EV Durango, which will be produced at the Detroit Assembly starting in 2026.
