Kentucky News: Essential Car Maintenance Tips for Teen Driver Safety Week

Teen Driver Safety Week Comes to an End with Impaired Driving Awareness Event in Paducah, KY

The Arrive Alive Tour, a cross-country effort to raise awareness about impaired driving, made a stop at Paducah Tilghman High School during Teen Driver Safety Week. The tour featured a virtual reality car simulator that allowed students to experience driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Brendan Darrow, team lead of the Arrive Alive Tour, highlighted the importance of addressing these scenarios, as they are common among teen drivers who often find themselves in situations involving alcohol and drugs.

The simulator used two metal plates to allow students to turn the wheels, a Bluetooth sensor underneath the steering wheel to track steering movements, and a VR headset to provide a realistic scenario. The event aimed to educate teenagers about the dangers of impaired driving and encourage responsible decision-making.

While impaired driving is a significant concern, experts also emphasized the importance of regular car maintenance. Corey Polsgrove, Auto Tech Instructor at Paducah Tilghman High, explained that neglecting car maintenance can lead to various issues, such as loose steering components, which can affect driving control, especially when combined with driving under the influence.

Polsgrove advised students to listen to their cars and pay attention to any warning signs or unusual noises. He emphasized that understanding one’s own car and performing routine checks, such as tire inspections, checking oil levels, and monitoring dashboard lights, can help prevent costly repairs and ensure safer driving experiences.

Nicholas Fox, a junior at Paducah Tilghman, emphasized the importance of car knowledge, highlighting the potential financial consequences of neglecting car maintenance. He encouraged fellow students to learn about their cars to avoid expensive mechanic or dealership fees.

In conclusion, the Arrive Alive Tour provided valuable education on the dangers of impaired driving, while experts stressed the significance of regular car maintenance and understanding one’s own vehicle. Both initiatives aim to promote safe and responsible driving practices among teenagers in Paducah, KY.
