Mitsubishi Triton Reveals Competition Version for Asia Cross Country Rally
Excitement is building as Mitsubishi unveils the competition version of its new Triton pickup truck, hot on the heels of its recent debut. This powerful rally truck is set to compete in the highly anticipated Asia Cross Country Rally, taking place in Thailand and Laos in August. Car enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike are eagerly awaiting this thrilling event.
The double-cab Triton rally truck boasts a formidable 2.4-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, generating an impressive 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and 347 pound-feet (470 Newton-meters) of torque. To ensure optimal performance during the rally’s challenging river crossings, an engine snorkel has been installed, assisting the Triton in maintaining maximum power and efficiency.
Power is efficiently transferred to the wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, utilizing Mitsubishi’s renowned Super Select 4WD-II system. Additionally, limited-slip differentials on both axles enhance the vehicle’s maneuverability and grip, further solidifying its competitive edge.
The Triton rally truck comes equipped with a revised suspension, featuring twin dampers on each corner, offering enhanced stability and control. The track width is wider than the stock model, providing increased stability during high-speed off-road maneuvers. The truck rides on 17-inch wheels, fitted with high-performance Yokohama Geolander tires, perfectly suited for the demanding rally terrain.
In order to reduce weight and enhance the Triton’s aerodynamics, carbon-fiber components have been utilized for the hood, doors, and cargo bed. This not only improves the truck’s overall performance but also adds a visually striking element to its appearance. A prominent bar has been fitted to the A-pillar, situated opposite the snorkel, serving as both a functional and stylish feature.
Inside, the Triton rally truck boasts a stripped-down interior, with a strong focus on safety. A robust roll cage provides essential protection for the driver and co-driver, ensuring their well-being throughout the rally’s challenging stages.
Hiroshi Masuoka, the Team Mitsubishi Ralliart team director, expressed his confidence in the Triton rally cars, stating that they have successfully undergone over 2,000 km of rigorous endurance testing in both Japan and Thailand, encountering no major issues. Masuoka himself will accompany the rally trucks in a specially-prepared Delica D:5, featuring a matching Ralliart paint scheme, a roof basket, and a distinguished light bar.
The sixth-generation Triton, or L200 as it is known in some markets, has also garnered significant attention as a road-legal model. Offering improved torsional rigidity, thanks to an updated ladder frame, the new Triton has become a top choice for off-road enthusiasts.
Buyers have the freedom to choose from various body configurations, including the practical double cab, club cab, and single cab options. Mitsubishi has announced three different versions of the 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine, each with their unique power outputs. These range from 148 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, to 181 horsepower and 316 lb-ft of torque, up to the range-topping 201 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. Customers can select between a responsive six-speed automatic transmission or a versatile six-speed manual gearbox.
Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, equipped with a limited-slip center differential, allows for seamless power distribution, typically allocating 40 percent to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear wheels. The Triton also offers selectable drive modes, such as 2H for normal driving conditions, 4H for increased traction, 4HLc for locking the center differential, and 4LLc for low-range gearing with the center differential engaged. Additionally, the vehicle features Active Yaw Control, further enhancing cornering performance by applying the brake to the inside front wheel. Noteworthy off-roading features, including hill descent control and hill start assist, further highlight the Triton’s versatility and capability.
Thailand will be the first market to witness the launch of the new Triton, with Mitsubishi gradually introducing it to other Asian markets. However, at this time, there is no indication of the Triton being available in the United States.
As the exciting Asia Cross Country Rally approaches, Mitsubishi’s Triton rally truck has set the stage for an adrenaline-fueled competition. With its powerful performance, enhanced suspension, and rugged design, the Triton rally truck is ready to take on the challenging terrains of Thailand and Laos. Car enthusiasts and rally fans alike eagerly await the arrival of this thrilling event, where the Triton rally truck’s capabilities will undoubtedly be put to the test.
