Top motorsport drivers to compete in the challenging Waimate 50 Horsepower Hill Climb

Preparations for Waimate 50, one of the biggest events in Waimate, New Zealand, are underway. The event will feature the country’s top motorsport drivers racing up the town’s White Horse Hill. The Waimate 50 Gravel Edition’s Horsepower Hill Climb will take place from Friday to Sunday, with 50 teams from across the country competing in ATV, quad bike, and rally car races.

Event organizer Rob Aikman expressed excitement about the event, highlighting that it will be the first time that New Zealand motorsport stars Hayden Paddon and Sloan Cox will compete against each other on the White Horse Hill track. Aikman described it as a special moment for Waimate 50 to have drivers of their caliber participating in the event.

The Horsepower Hill Climb debuted in 2021 as an alternative to the long-standing street racing format. Paddon, driving an all-electric Hyundai Kona rally car, emerged as the winner of the inaugural edition. Cox, in his first appearance in Waimate in 2022, was crowned the champion, narrowly defeating Matt Penrose.

The organizing party is currently setting up the course for the drivers and spectators, ensuring the necessary safety measures are in place. Aikman reported that preparations have been going well, and various teams from around New Zealand will also set up on Friday.

The Hill Climb race traditionally attracts high-profile competitors from across the country. Aikman stated that around 50 teams will participate in this year’s event, which he believes is the perfect number. With some drivers arriving in Waimate on Friday, the public will have the opportunity to meet them at Seddon Square and witness a small car demonstration.

Aikman urged the South Canterbury community to visit Waimate over the weekend and enjoy the race along with what the town has to offer. The entry fee for adults is $10 per day, while children under 12 accompanied by an adult can enter for free. Ample car parking is available, and Eftpos facilities will be provided at the gate. Vans will be in operation throughout the weekend, transporting spectators to different points on the hill.

Waimate 50 promises an exhilarating motorsport experience for both participants and spectators alike. Don’t miss out on the action-packed races and the thrilling competitions between New Zealand’s top drivers. Head to Waimate this weekend and join in the excitement!
